| Visiting Peterhead and Tourism |
Walking, cycling, golfing, birdwatching, to mention just a few leisure pursuits, the freedom of space, the lack of traffic - are some of the experiences awaiting you. With 19,000 inhabitants, Peterhead is the largest town in Aberdeenshire. Over the centuries its economy has evolved though sealing, whaling, herring fishing and, more recently, has become Europe's busiest white-fish port. North Sea offshore oil & gas installations have brought much new business to the town over the past 30 years. Looking beyond the area's industrious prosperity, you will still find a pace of life and laid-back attitude which hallmarks the region. From the UK's most dramatic coastline, you can explore inland through wide open rolling countryside, illuminated for much of the year with seemingly never-ending daylight. With a multitude of beaches, clifftops and forests to explore, this stunning land stretches up from Peterhead to encompass St. Combs in the north, sweeps down and round taking in the village of New Deer to the west, Hatton and Cruden Bay to the south and coming full circle to Boddam, just south of Peterhead. With the highest concentration of ancient monuments and standing stones in mainland UK, Buchan's rich history is as unique as its climate; low rainfall and clean air make it ideal for a plethora of outdoor pursuits. Don't forget Peterhead Scottish Week; normally the third or last week in July. See www.peterheadscottishweek.org (external link)
