A NORTH-EAST congregation will today unveil its hall’s £80,000 new look. The Harvest Community Church at Peterhead has transformed the hall with a cash prize won through a national phone-in contest. The church was a runner-up in the People’s Millions contest, organised by the Big Lottery Fund and promoted by ITV. It was one of eight community groups in the north of Scotland’s regional heat. TV viewers voted for the causes they wanted to see receive the cash. The Chapel Street church lost out to another group, the Dolphin Community Centre, at Tayport, but was named the region’s most popular runner-up. Today, the hall will be re-opened to the public. It is hoped the new base, which features a new kitchen, will be used by the wider community, including cookery clubs. Project co-ordinator Margaret Baird said: “We just cannot believe the transformation. “It makes me wonder how we managed with the space as it was for so long.” Construction was carried out by Harlaw Building Contractors and it was designed by Inverurie-based architects JAMstudio and quantity surveyors Beedie Mitchell of Aberdeen. The hall will be formally re-launched at 11am. Visitors will be served refreshments. |
