A NUMBER of areas across Aberdeenshire have been selected as being suitable for windfarms of up to 12 machines. Four sites, all of which are in Buchan, Formartine or on the boundary between Garioch and Marr, were chosen after the Scottish Government instructed local authorities to find suitable areas for 20 megawatt farms. Aberdeenshire Council employees worked with the Macaulay Institute to choose the sites, which are considered to have few planning and environmental constraints. Members on Aberdeenshire Council’s Formartine area committee yesterday were asked to approve the guidance before an approaching deadline in December. After much discussion they did so, but added a condition that the approval was subject to a consultation of local community councils, to be carried out later. Some members, such as Paul Johnston and Debra Storr, wanted to go even further and defer the decision until local community councils in Formartine had been consulted about the areas. Two of the four areas considered to be suitable for 20MW farms are to the north-east and south-west of Ellon. Liberal Democrat Formartine councillor Mr Johnston said: “Given the implications of this I would like to test the public support at the earliest opportunity.” Council leader Anne Robertson proposed that members should agree to the proposal subject to consultation at a later date. The motion won seven votes to Mr Johnston’s three. The two other areas considered to be suitable for 20MW windfarms are to the south-west of Peterhead and to the south-east of Alford between Garioch and Marr. |
