Club's 'flirting' stunt lands it in hot water

By Press and Journal,

Councillors who threatened to take away a nightclub's licence have been told to "lighten up".

The move was threatened over a Valentine's stunt that saw revellers given wristbands to suggest if they were available.

The threat to axe the licence at Nemesis in Peterhead was branded "a bit sad" after it was mooted at an Aberdeenshire Licensing Board meeting.

Fraserburgh councillor Brian Topping said members of the committee really needed to "lighten up a bit".

The club was criticised by members of the board after holding a Valentine's party which used coloured wristbands to encourage flirting. The nightclub offered revellers the chance to "meet the love of your dreams".

Green wrist bands were intended to mean 'I will', blue wrist bands 'I won't' and orange wrist bands 'I might'.

Cllr Topping said: "I think this was just a bit of fun really. If this is the only problem the licensing board has with it then I really think they're a bit sad.

"As long as everything's being done in a safe and secure place, and no trouble is being caused, then folk really need to lighten up a bit if they think this is a bad thing."

The board considered an advert for the event to potentially be in breach of four of the five licensing objectives of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.

A copy of the advert has been passed to Grampian Police.
