However, it still takes a fair amount of work to maintain it as it is the information held within which keeps the site evolving.The old site, www.blootoon.com, was originally created to provide a list of useful links to other places of interest. However, it became apparent that as the number of links and articles increased, it could not realistically be maintained without being converted into a full content management system. It was a nice idea but the technology in those days was simply not capable of doing what this current site can do. A content management system allows protected access to one or many people, with differing levels, to add to and amend a website. Moreover, it uses relational database trickery to allow a more seamless experience, including the process of automatically updating areas like 'recently added articles' and 'related articles' (by use of keywords). A variety of access levels can be given (author, editor, publisher etc). For example, you'll find a related articles section to the left of most pages allowing you to quickly jump to an associated, normally relevant, page connected with the previous page. The system used on this site is Joomla (version 1.53), and all additional added components (like the Business Directory, Photo Album etc) are also, where possible, open source. Updates generally take only minutes rather than hours. For the technically minded, we use css (rather than tables) to sort the layout within the current template. The site is written to aid accessibility and is also validated to W3C standards where possible. The biggest problem with any web site is maintaining currency - a site which is not updated will quickly become stale. We can add 'sell by' dates to our articles, meaning they will automatically be removed at a date of our choosing. We therefore hope we have addressed these problems and would hope that any business, public sector or private organisation procuring future websites will also bear these points in mind - we don't like wasting money either. This website is not, nor will it ever be complete. But you can help by providing input whenever you see fit - it is not our website; it is yours and you can keep it evolving. Just tell us.
